1. Overview

This guide provides an overview of server settings and port configurations for INGOS E-Mail.
It is designed to assist customers in manually setting up their email clients or devices.
INGOS E-Mail exclusively supports encrypted connections for maximum security.

2. Hostname

The server address for all INGOS E-Mail V2 customers is:

mail.ingos.net

Note

Exceptions apply to customers using a dedicated Enterprise server, where custom settings may be applicable.

WARNING

Use only mail.ingos.net (for Basic and Pro subscriptions) as the hostname for configuring your email services. Other hostnames are not supported and may result in connection issues.

3. Port Overview and Usage

The following ports are used for accessing INGOS E-Mail. All connections are encrypted,
and unencrypted ports (e.g., Port 110 and 143) are not supported.

Function Port Protocol Usage
Web Interface and ActiveSync 443 HTTPS Access to the web interface and synchronization of mobile devices via ActiveSync.
SMTP (Sending) 465 SSL/TLS SMTP Sending emails over an encrypted connection.
SMTP (Alternative) 587 Submission Alternative to Port 465 for email sending, also encrypted.
POP3 (Receiving) 995 SSL/TLS POP Receiving emails via POP3 over an encrypted connection.
IMAP (Receiving) 993 SSL/TLS IMAP Receiving and syncing emails via IMAP over an encrypted connection.
Chat (XMPP) 5222 XMPP Access to the chat feature (if enabled).

Note

Port 80 is used for HTTP requests but is automatically redirected to HTTPS (Port 443) for secure connections.

WARNING

Ports 110 (POP) and 143 (IMAP) are not supported as only encrypted connections are allowed.

4. What is a Dedicated Server?

A dedicated server means that a single customer uses a server exclusively for their emails and data. This is different from the Basic or Pro version, where multiple customers share a server.

A dedicated server offers numerous advantages:

  • Higher Security: Since only your organization has access to the server, individual security measures such as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or Single Sign-On (SSO) can be implemented more easily. These adjustments provide additional protection.
  • Better Reputation: Since only your emails are sent through the server's IP address, the IP remains clean and has a lower risk of being added to spam lists.
  • Brand Identity (Branding): You can customize the user interface to match your brand, such as adding your logo or colors. This strengthens recognition among employees and customers.
  • Flexibility: The server can be configured according to your requirements, such as specific ports or custom security policies.
  • Higher Performance: All server resources are exclusively available to you, resulting in faster processing and more stable usage.

The Enterprise version of INGOS E-Mail is based on this dedicated server structure, making it ideal for businesses requiring maximum security, performance, and customizations.

5. Enterprise Customers

For customers using the Enterprise variant, ports can be customized according to their specific requirements and security policies.

The default configuration, however, aligns with the standard ports listed above. If individual changes are needed, please contact technical support.

6. Example: Connecting a Web Application to INGOS Email

The following configuration shows how to set up a web application to send and receive emails via INGOS Email. In this example, we use IMAPS for receiving and SMTPS for sending emails. These settings ensure secure and encrypted connections.

Settings for the Web Application (example):

Parameter Setting
IMAP Hostname mail.ingos.net
IMAP Port 993
IMAP Username example@ingos.com
IMAP Password yourSe$curePasswordwithNumbers0612
Leave emails on the server Yes
IMAP Connection Type TLS
Use the same mail server for sending Yes
Email Header Encoding base64
SMTP Hostname mail.ingos.net
SMTP Server Port 25
SMTP Port (TLS/SSL) 465
Use SMTP Authentication Yes
SMTP Username example@ingos.com
SMTP Password yourSe$curePasswordwithNumbers0104
SMTP Connection Type TLS

Explanation of the Settings

This configuration ensures that the web application can securely fetch incoming emails via an encrypted IMAPS connection (Port 993) and send outgoing emails using SMTPS (Port 465).

It is recommended to enable the setting "Leave emails on the server" to ensure that emails remain accessible on other devices.

With these settings, you can, for example, operate a contact form that automatically sends confirmation emails to users or saves incoming messages to your email inbox.

WARNING

Do not use your personal email account in a web application or form. In case of an attack, there is a risk that your personal account could be compromised.

WARNING

To minimize this risk, please use a separate email account specifically designated for use in web applications. Additionally, we strongly recommend using INGOS Web Space in combination with the INGOS Web Application Firewall (WAF) to ensure optimal protection for your applications.
